| Jap{u} Ji Sahib WaheGuru Ji Ka Khalsa, WaheGuru Ji Ki Fateh In the Nitnem(daily routine) gutka(small book), Jap{u}* Ji Sahib consists of the Mool Mantar,an opening Salok, a set of 38 Pauris (hymns) and a final Salok. The gurbani appears at the very beginning of Sri Guru Granth Sahib(SGGSJ) from Ang 1 to Ang 8. The word 'Ang' (limb) is used as a polite way to refer to a page (as referred to as 'panna' in SGGSJ. Even though Jap{u}* Ji Sahib is generally read first thing in the morning, any section of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Jee can be read at any time of the day. The word ‘Jap’ means to ‘recite’ or ‘to chant’ and implies practicing this truthful path to achieve the aim of human life. ‘Ji/Jee’ is a word that is used to show respect as is the word ‘Sahib’. * "Japu" infact refers to all of the gurbani in Guru Granth Sahib. * source: gurbani.org "The Jap as indicated in the Gurbani is unique. For one, all other Jap needs the support of the external gross body, while the Jap of the Gurbani does not - It is done with the support of the Budhi (discerning intellect, Vivek-Budhi...). The Gurbani asks us to do the Giaan-Jap ("ਗਿਆਨੁ ਜਪਹੁ"). And the Giaan (Wisdom, Knowledge, Aatm-Giaan, Brahm-Giaan...) is the subject of the Budhi, not the gross external body." Parmaatam*** (supreme soul, God, as oppose to individuals soul - atam{u}) has countless qualities. Some major ones are mentioned at the beginning** of Jap{u} ji Sahib. ** Some refer to this section of the gurbani as the Mool Mantar. 'Mool' infact refer's to the primodial origins as in "ਮਨ ਤੂੰ ਜੋਤਿ ਸਰੂਪੁ ਹੈ ਆਪਣਾ ਮੂਲੁ ਪਛਾਣੁ ॥ : Mann toon joti saroop hai aapanaa mool pashaan. Mann har jee terai naal hai gurumutee rang maan. Mool pashaanahi taan sahu jaanahi maran jeevan kee sojhee hoee. Gur parasaadee eko jaanahi taan doojaa bhaaou na hoee. Mann saant aaee vajee vadhaaee taa hoaa paravaan. Iou kahai Nanak mann toon joti saroop hai apanaa mool pashaan ||5||: O my mind, you are the embodiment or the True Image of the Divine Light (i.e., God) - recognize your Origin (Roots, Reality, etc.). O my mind, the Divine is with you; through the Divine Teachings, enjoy His Love. Acknowledge your Source, and then you will know your Divine Beloved, and understand death and birth. By the Divine Grace, know the One; then, you will not love any other. Peace comes to the mind, and gladness resounds; then, you will be acclaimed. Thus says Nanak: O my mind, you are the embodiment or the True Image of the Divine Light (i.e., God) - recognize your Origin ||5|| (sggs 441)." *** parmatam(u) - ਜਿਨੀ ਆਤਮੁ ਚੀਨਿਆ ਪਰਮਾਤਮੁ ਸੋਈ ॥: Jinee aatam cheeniaa parmaatam soee: Those who understand their own Soul, are themselves Parmaatam (sgg 421).

It defines the goal as the realization (understanding) of God, the Almighty Lord, Ik Oangkar, and describes the ways to achieve that. The hymns also caution us about the pitfalls in the path to that goal and the methods of avoiding them or overcoming them. The message of Jap Ji can be understood properly only against the background of the religions that were practiced when Guru Nanak appeared on the scene........" | | The Message of JAP JI, A way for the realization of human mission -TRANSLATION OF JAPJI [ Dr. Gurbakhsh Singh Ph.
