Starting in 1999 all religious holidays will be observed according to the newly modified Nanakshahi Calendar. The years of the Nanakshahi calendar start with the birth of Guru Nanak Dev in 1469, 1998 is considered Nanakshahi 530. The modification is that now the calendar is based on the length of the tropical solar year, instead of the lunar cycle, meaning that dates will not fluctuate from year to year as they did previously. The Sikh New Year begins with Chet 1 which in the Common Era calendar is March 14, in 1999 and it will be the year 531 Nanakshahi. For further background on Nanakshahi calendar downloaded pdf (right click to download). Calendar in Gurmukhi can be downloaded from http://www.sgpc.net/festivals/nanakshahi.asp

Notes :

1. 'Joti Jot' (Meaning: immersed in the Eternal Light). The Guru's and holy Sikh scriptures teach that if someone is immortal (or attained immortality during the course of their life), when they leave this existence they have not died. They have rejoined with God. As someone who is immortal cannot die. This special condition is given the word Joti Jot.

2. 'Parkash' means light, radiance, expansion. We do not attach the process of birth to the appearance of great souls on earth. The reason: Aap Mukat, Mukat Kare Sansaar – some free souls come on this earth with their own will to liberate the world. Gurbani says: janam maran dhuhehoo mehi naahee jan paroupakaaree aaeae ||
Those generous, humble beings are above both birth and death. (Ang 749, SGGS Ji)

Such great souls neither crave for life nor have fear of death. These souls are free yet they come on this earth. Why? To liberate the world. Need keeps arising for this from time to time.(excerpt taken from katha of Bhai Maskeen Singh Ji)

3. 'Vadeh Sahibzada' and 'Chotey Sahibzada' means older son and younger son respectively. ...>Read more here

4. 'Guru' - The term 'Guru' in Sikhi is not used for a teacher or a guide or an expert or even a human body. The word Guru is composed of two terms GU means darkness and RU means Light.

In Sikhi the word 'Guru' is, thus, defined as the Light that dispels all darkness, and that is called JOT (Divine Light). Guru Nanak was, therefore, the EMBODIMENT of Divine Light:

'Gur Nanak Dev Govind roop.'
(Basant Mohalla 5, SGGSJ 1192, Guru Granth Sahib)
'Guru Nanak is embodiment of the Light of God.'
